What inspired you to start your business?
During the pandemic, we saw that so many patients and families were lacking care during end-of-life, leaving them struggling to find help. We saw this in our nursing careers as well as personally in our own lives. So, instead of complaining about the lack of access and help, we decided to do something about it.
How does your business contribute to the local community?
Our business bridges gaps within the healthcare community for adults, seniors, and end-of-life care.
Can you share a memorable experience or success story related to your business?
During one of our free advance care workshops we had a community member say that one of her friends (who is an NP) told her that there was no way that this would be free or without a catch. That these workshops cost hundred of dollars and she as amazed by the offering and information that was provided.
What challenges have you faced in building your business, and how have you overcome them?
Educating the public about end-of-life doulas (death doulas) on our role in the community. This is still ongoing, and we talk to as many people as we can about our services and what we do.
What makes your business unique?
Our vast knowledge of all aspects of end-of-life care.
What advice would you give to other small business owners who are just starting out?
Don't be afraid to put yourself out there. You will find your "yes" among the "no"s.
How do you see your business evolving in the future?
I think there will be a significant increase in death doulas because there is a climbing geriatric population that our current healthcare system cannot maintain.
Do you have a special message that you'd like to share with the community through this article?
It's only with the acceptance of death that you can really appreciate life.
